Satellite SEMIT 2026 Meeting

The Spanish Society of Regenerative Medicine and Tissue Engineering (SEMIT) was founded as a society in 2024 to address the need to advance the development and application of these promising fields in Spain.

This year we are organizing the II edition of SEMIT Congress in close collaboration with TERMIS-EU 2026! This marks the consolidation of a leading platform for knowledge exchange among researchers, clinicians, and companies in the TERM field in Spain. The Satellite SEMIT 2026 Meeting will be held the day before TERMIS-EU 2026, on April 20, 2026 in the Palau de Congressos de Palma.

This event will bring together prominent national and international experts to discuss the latest advances and challenges in bioengineering, advanced biomaterials, Biofabrication and many others, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration and the transfer of technology into clinical practice. We will soon announce the plenary speakers and the tentative program of the SEMIT 2026 Meeting.

Be part of the future of regenerative medicine and tissue engineering in Spain and become a member of the society. Join SEMIT 2026 and TERMIS-EU 2026 and connect with the community that is transforming science into real solutions for health.

Abstract submission and registration for SEMIT 2026 can be done through the same platform as for the event TERMIS-EU 2026.

Invited Speakers at SEMIT 2026 Meeting

    Dr. Manuel M. Mazo Vega

    Center for Applied Medical Research
    CIMA University of Navarra
    Navarra, Spainnia, Spain

    Lecture Title

Advanced fabrication and bioanalysis for the generation of human cardiac tissue in the lab
    Short bio

A Biochemist by training I am born and bred in Pamplona. My expertise was tilted to stem cell biology during my PhD and tissue engineering in my postdoc. My PhD (completed in 2009) was centred on the application of adult stem cells on animal models of myocardial infarction. I then spent 3 years in the same group upscaling the therapy to a clinically-relevant model of infarction in pig, whilst deriving our fist human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC) lines. Afterwards, I obtained funding for a 4-year postdoc at Imperial College London, under the supervision of Prof Molly Stevens, where I gained significant experience in tissue engineering and materials, in a highly interdisciplinary environment. In 2017 I came back to Pamplona, where in 2018 I started my research group. In these last years, I have settled and established a strongly-collaborative research line, aiming to find solutions for biomedical problems through the application of cellular and biofabrication technology. My team specialised in using hiPSC-derived phenotypes and biofabrication technologies to build human myocardial tissues for therapeutic and modelling applications, with a special emphasis in cardio-oncology and transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy.

    Prof. Elisabeth Engel

    Biomaterials for Regenerative Therapies
Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC)
    Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain

    Lecture Title

Recreating Tumor-Stroma Interactions Using Decellularized Matrix in 3D Cancer Models
    Short bio
Dr. Elisabeth Engel got her PhD in 2003 in bone metabolism diseases in medical school. She was awarded with a postdoc fellow from the Ministry of Science at the Technical University of Catalonia in Biomaterials for bone tissue regeneration and since 2010 has been professor at this university. She was appointed principal investigator of the group of Biomaterials for Regenerative Therapies at IBEC in September 2012. The research conducted in the last 10 years brings together basic research and a strong effort in transference and translation, with several projects in collaboration with pharma and industry partners. The combination of the materials and controlled manufacturing processes has allowed the development of new customized biodegradable systems for different clinical applications such as ophthalmology, nervous system, skin, tendon, bone and cardiac tissue. Prof. Engel has published around 80 papers in JRC journals and many invited lectures, and received an award for technological research (Barcelona City Award).

    Dr. Ing. Ricardo Tejero

Director of R&D, Materials and Surfaces
    BTI Biotechnology Institute
    Vitoria-Gasteiz (Álava), Spain

    Lecture Title

Engineering Biology: Contrarian Thinking and Clinical Reality
    Short bio
Dr. Ing. Ricardo Tejero is the Director of R&D, Materials and Surfaces at Biotechnology Institute I+D, a leading Spanish biotech firm, and a Professor on the Master Course in Implantology at UIRMI (University of the Basque Country, UPV-EHU). He holds an Engineering Degree in Materials Science (INSA de Lyon, 2005) and a Master of Science in Biomaterials and Surface Chemistry (TU Dresden, 2006). His Ph.D. in Biomedicine and Molecular Biology (UPV-EHU, 2014) was awarded the highest distinction and the National Doctorate Prize. Dr. Tejero specializes in the biochemical and biomechanical interface of hard and soft tissue implants. Early work at the Max-Bergmann Zentrum für Biomaterialien involved engineering bone-like surface coatings using glucuronic acid-doped collagen type I as a biomineralization scaffold for calcium-phosphate phases. Transitioning to Biotechnology Institute I+D in 2007, Dr. Tejero pioneered the integration of platelet-rich plasma concepts with ion-modified implant surfaces. He has since patented tailored implant surface modifications to optimize the oral microenvironment during regeneration. His research critically addresses the initial phases of healing, specifically hemostasis, immunomodulation, proteomics, and microbiome control at the implant-tissue interface. In his R&D leadership roles, Dr. Tejero successfully translates fundamental research into commercial medical devices, overseeing industrialization, regulatory compliance, and quality control. His current research investigates the influence of localized biomechanical cues on implant survivability, the development of next generation transmucosal implant surfaces, and the implementation of in vitro alternatives to reduce reliance on in vivo models.
